Clik here to view. The other day while driving home from work, Dwight and I saw several cars nearly get into horrific accidents. One car weaved into oncoming traffic, and we saw the driver jump and swerve back into their lane with a quizzical look on his face. Another car had just started merging into our lane with the driver not even looking before he merged. This all happened simultaneously! And then we saw two cars barreling in the wrong direction in the Wal-Mart parking lot, nearly sideswiping people who were traveling in the correct direction (including us). Both of the drivers had puzzled looks on their faces; they could not understand why we were so irritated with them as our vehicles passed just inches apart. One thing we noticed with all of these drivers is that they looked at the other drivers with surprised and shocked expressions–like it was the other persons’ fault! It was almost as if they were surprised to find that there were other vehicles on the road.
This happens over and over again during any given week. It’s almost as if people are asleep at the wheel. I know there are plenty of distractions, but I wonder how people can be so oblivious basically driving a speeding missile. A car is not a bike or skateboard; it is a deadly weapon. We drive 2 ton+ vehicles that can kill, mutilate, and change lives forever. Why are people letting the cares of this world distract them to the point where they can’t even concentrate on the short ride to work, the grocery store, or a meeting? Why are they not more aware of their surroundings? How many times have you seen people on their phones at sporting events? They can’t even concentrate for five minutes on what is right in front of them. I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve had to honk our horn because the driver in front was off in La La Land while the light had turned green a minute earlier.
The Bible tells us to be sober-minded and alert. I Peter 5:8 tells us to, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” This is not a subtle warning; it requires no interpretation. The devil is out to get you, Christian, and he will use any means necessary to destroy you. If all it takes is keeping you distracted to a point where you are not paying attention, he will do it. What God is not telling us to do is wake up from our regular night of sleep. He is warning us to be alert of EVERYTHING around us at all times. We cannot afford to brush off this profound warning. Satan is on the prowl, and we are on the menu. Be alert.
God bless,
Rebecca
